Welcome
to our sales portal for handwoven Hereke silk carpets. The Hereke silk carpet of today represents a continuation of the Turkish carpet weaving tradition which brought forth the famous palace carpets. The Ottoman Sultan Abdulmecid I decided to establish a carpet manufacturing center at Hereke, a small town near Istanbul, when traveling through the area in 1830. He engaged the greatest artists of the times and the best carpet weaving masters of the Ottoman Empire to design and weave carpets of pure natural silk.
The Hereke silk carpets were woven exclusively for the Sultan's palace, and it was also the Sultan who decided which visiting kings and princes would receive these masterpieces as gifts. It has only been very recently – since 1950 - that Hereke carpet manufacturers and dealers have been allowed to sell Hereke silk carpets independently. All Hereke silk carpets are woven using the symmetrical knot technique.
You can now own these prized carpets, which were once destined only for kings and princes.
And even today, 170 years later, Hereke silk carpets are still crafted according to the original designs of the palace artists.
Two different kinds of knots are used in carpet weaving to create patterns and motifs:
The symmetrical double knot, or Turkish knot
The Turkish knot is knotted around two warp threads. Both ends of the weft thread are wrapped completely around the warp threads and then pulled out between them and cut off. This double knot technique is what makes Turkish carpets so strong and durable.
The asymmetrical single knot, or Persian knot
The Persian knot is knotted asymmetrically around two adjacent warp threads; the weft thread is wrapped completely around one warp thread and looped under the next, thus covering half of it.We offer handwoven Hereke silk carpets direct from the manufacturer with a quality guarantee and proof of origin by the expert of handwoven Hereke silk carpets on the Chamber of Commerce in Berlin, Germany.
