Carpets and rugs were wooven and knoted for own needs by nomadic people who have been settled in Hereke since hundreds of years.

The fame of this city close to Istanbul is caused by the royal court manufactory, established by Abdülmecid I in 1844, who joined there the best artists and masters of knotting of his empire for designing and creating unique pieces with never seen patterns and for knotting the finest carpets of the world.

Abdülmecid I tried to enhance the prestige and glory of the Ottoman Empire by introducing extensive reforms and by building “the biggest palace of the world” what in result should has been well-appointed by “the finest carpets of the world”.

The masters of knots succeeded in creating and manufacturing the finest carpets of the world because of using finest silk from Bursa in warp, weft and knots. These carpets have been unexceeded regarding to their composition of colors, harmony of pattern and fineness of knotting until today.

The Dolmabahçe Palace („palace of raised gardens“) of Sultan Abdülmecid I and Hereke’s art of carpet knotting have survived the centuries and are evidence of young sultan’s ambitious plans and diligence of artistry, taste and ability of the architects, artists and artisans of their time.
